At our rounded planning rate of RM 5.50 to £1, £2,000 is about RM 11,000 a month. Here’s what that actually covers for a family of four — and the one thing it doesn’t.
The monthly receipt
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Furnished 3-bed condo | RM 3,500 |
| Electricity, water, aircon | RM 400 |
| Internet + 2 mobile lines | RM 250 |
| Groceries + eating out | RM 3,000 |
| Grab and MRT, no car | RM 600 |
| Everything else | RM 800 |
| Total | RM 8,550 (≈ £1,555) |
| Remaining | RM 2,450 (≈ £445) |
These are planning estimates, not exact Numbeo averages, and this rate is a rounded planning convention, not a live exchange quote. School fees and moving costs are excluded.
What RM 3,500 actually rents (Mont Kiara, October 2026)
A furnished 3-bedroom, 1,015 sq ft listing example in Mont Kiara. Facilities, parking and availability vary by listing — compare the block, condition and total cost rather than treating this as a fixed price. (Sources: PropertyGuru, iProperty, both checked 27–28 Oct 2026.)
Health insurance isn’t in this number
Private family health insurance depends on age, nationality and pre-existing conditions — anyone quoting a flat monthly figure without asking those questions is guessing. Budget it from the RM 2,450 remaining, and get a real quote before you commit to the move.
The exception that breaks this budget: international school
One child at a top-tier international school in KL (ISKL’s 2026–27 published tuition): RM 70,200–143,400 a year, or RM 5,850–11,950 a month as an annualised equivalent — not the actual payment schedule, and excluding application and registration fees. Two self-funded places at even the low end already exceeds the RM 11,000 planning budget before any living costs. Other schools need their own calculation.
So who does this budget actually fit?
It works if school fees are covered separately (or don’t apply yet), and your everyday spending matches these allowances. It doesn’t stretch to two international school places you’re funding yourself — that’s not a Malaysia-specific problem, it’s the same arithmetic anywhere.
